SRAM adds new Roam and Rail wheelsets to lineup

Posted by Caleb Smith on Friday April 12 2013

When the production studio that produces all of SRAM’s in-house movies loaded up the videos for these new wheels yesterday they accidentally left them public (just for 20 minutes), giving us here at Spoke a little preview of what was going to be released… well, today. And that is a whole slew of new wheels.

Enter the Roam and the Rail wheelsets. Both wheelsets are aimed squarely at everyday mountain bikers or what marketers like to refer to us now as The Enduro Market. Whatever the case, the growth in popularity of Enduro is pretty much bringing out the most sensible mountain bike products and mountain bikes, so I’m not complaining.

Right, the new wheelsets. As I said both the Roam and Rail are aimed at trail/enduro/all-mountain riding fraternity but the Roam has a slightly narrower bead width than the Rail, the Roam’s internal bead width is still a solid 21mm (with an external width of 28mm on the carbon model and 25.5mm on the alloy), the Rail features a stout 23mm internal bead width. The Rail is only available in alloy.

Both models of wheels share a bunch of new technology as well. One of the major things being SOLO spokes, SOLO means that in the whole wheelset there is just a single spoke length, which, if you’ve ever travelled or build and repair you own wheels you’ll think is a pretty damn sensible feature to have. SOLO spokes are found on all new SRAM Roam and Rail wheels.

Keeping with the spokes, SRAM have designed a pretty funky new hub with some very economical lacing, and yes it’s got a funky name as well. Double Decker slots and stacks the Solo spokes on top of each other giving the wheels the widest possible dish, which in turn results in a strong as hell wheel. The hubs are totally convertible as well, each set is shipped with hub conversions for all axle configurations front and rear, and obviously they are XD (xx1) driver compatible (as well as nine and ten speed).

There’s not too much info on the hub internals but SRAM assure us this of their new Star Ratchet: “This patented freewheel system uses precision ratchets with extremely high load capacity and reliability. Thanks to its no-tools-required design, routine maintenance is easy.”

And like everything these days all the wheels are available in 26″, 27.5″ and 29″.
