Crankworx Rotorua tickets (on sale) and provisional schedule released

CWX-Rotorua-TicketsI was just going to do a straight cut and paste with this press release but I'm pretty interested in what people actually think about the title, specifically the tickets part of it. You see, the whole reason for this press release is to let you know that tickets are now on sale for Crankworx in Rotorua. Now, they're cheap at $69 for the five day anytime pass, but that still makes them $69 more expensive than Crankworx Whistler and Crankworx in Les Deux Alpes where spectating is free. Now I've asked Tak Mutu at Crankworx Rotorua where exactly this $69 is going and he pointed out that that a return Skyline Gondola ticket is normally $27 and this will get you unlimited access to the gondola for the day (or week) of entry. He also pointed out that the company running Crankworx in New Zealand is not for profit and they "will either reinvest surplus revenue in to the event or distribute to charities. It's in the constitution."

Now playing devil's advocate here for a minute (because I'd be happy paying the $69) has got me thinking a little. I mean it's all good and well that the ticket will be paying for gondola access,  but a quick look at the below schedule shows that most of the major of events require tickets, and I'm just guessing here but I think the slopestyle, pump track and the whip offs are all at the bottom of the gondola?

So if I'm not in town for the event and I'm not a mountain biker and I want to look at what's happening then I have to buy a $35 day ticket? From what I understand the key to Crankworx Whistler's success is the fact that every Joe and his mate can come and watch for free. They buy beer, food, coffee and probably accommodation and contribute to the scene in general and, who knows, they may even want to get into mountain biking.

What are your thoughts? Is $69 fine? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill?

So here's that press release...

The five days of Crankworx Rotorua will be an epic spectacle and with ticket sales and the provisional schedule launched today, you can lock in plans to be there.

Crankworx is the world’s largest mountain biking festival and it will be in Rotorua from 25 – 29 March, 2015 featuring the best pro-athletes as well as competitions, concerts and culture.

The provisional schedule released today shows the events during the week include: The Official Opening, Australasia Whip Off Champs, New Zealand Pump Track Challenge, Dual Speed and Style, Downhill, Crankworx Rotorua Enduro and the kickoff of the Crankworx Triple Crown of Slopestyle.

There will also be the Bikes and Beats Music Festival featuring New Zealand’s top artists and for the families – Kidsworx as well.

Kidsworx events will include Pump Track Skills Sessions, Pimp My Bike, Hipster Downhill Race, Big Game Hunt Competition and a Criterium.

Kiwi Enduro World Series Trek Racing Team rider Justin Leov says to begin the professional mountain biking season on home soil will be a confidence boost and he can’t wait to see family, friends and supporters at the festival.

“Crankworx is out of this world and everyone from festival goers, to sports fans and mountain bikers will thrive on the atmosphere – make sure you’re there to see it all go down,” he says.

The pricing for a five day pass is Adult: $69NZD* and child (14 years and under) $49*. A one-day pass is Adult: $35* and Child: $25*. All passes include Skyline Rotorua gondola access and tickets can be bought through Ticketmaster with a link accessible at www.crankworx.com/rotorua. VIP experiences will be released soon as well. * Booking/Payment processing Fees apply

Crankworx Rotorua event director Tak Mutu says the city is amping up ready to host and show why it is one of the world’s top mountain biking meccas.

“The five days of Crankworx are going to be incredible with an amazing atmosphere for spectators, families and the world’s mountain biking legends - it’s a good time to secure tickets, book accommodation and lock in travel arrangements with your mates,” he says.

Crankworx Rotorua is the third international event for Crankworx, adding to the current festivals in Whistler, Canada and Les 2 Alpes, France.
