The opening weekend of the 2nd Rotorua Bike festival featured the New Zealand National Mountain Bike Championships.

Sunday was Downhill Day in the dramatic and challenging National Downhill course – The Taniwha.
In Māori mythology, taniwha (Māori pronunciation:[tanifa]) are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers (giant waves). They may be considered highly respected kaitiaki (protective guardians) of people and places, or in some traditions as dangerous, predatory beings…

The 2014 Bike Festival is on from February 14 to 23.
It runs every February with the 2015 Festival clicking into gear on Black Friday February 15.
