I just received an email from Greg McIntyre, the Brake Burner organiser, who has been frantically trying to find a new lift assisted venue for the Brake Burner. He now has a solution, but unfortunately it doesn’t involve a chairlift. Much like the Downieville Classic, easily the most famous Super D in existence, Greg’s new concept involves two parts, the XC climb (The Race from the Sky) and the all mountain Super D down. You can race both or just one, but if you do both it must be on the same bike. And the million dollar question, where is it? It will all take place at Snow Park/Snow Farm in the Cardrona Valley, near Wanaka. Read Greg’s press release below.
“After many days and hours trying to get a trail for the Brake Burner that has a chairlift I have to admit defeatI am unable to get a lift accessed trail that would be suitable for the 6hr Super D event format.
Cardrona Ski Resort and Snow Park, to their credit, were very accommodating but to no avail.
So I have a new style race, still suitable for the all mountain rider and an extended Super D.
The Race from the Sky will be held in the Cardrona valley, on the Snow Farm/Snow Park properties.
A race of two halves: a XC half (15-20km approx) and the Freeride blast on the OG trail with over 1000m of descent.
Competitors can enter as either a solo or team of two. Solo riders must use the same bike for the whole race while team riders can have use of whatever bike they like (light XC bike for the XC and a DH rig for the OG track).”
