With the sheer volume of chain lubes and other bike grease and oils out there, you might be inclined to think that it’s just a matter of grabbing whatever there is in the shop you’re in at the time. And most of them do exactly what they’re supposed to… but do some work better than others? A colleague in the USA had been espousing the virtues of his favourite lube to me for years, and when he insisted that he send some to try, I wasn’t really expecting anything out of the ordinary… it’s just lube right? A bottle of Dumonde Tech showed up, and it’s still going strong over a year later. Now it’s finally available here in New Zealand thanks to KRD Imports.
The Original brew is what I’ve been using, and it’s been keeping my drivetrains running smooth and quiet with minimal application. This stuff lasts. And they claim it’ll keep your drivetrain from wearing out for longer than most other lubes due to being made with a ‘low friction polymer’ which coats the chain with a ‘plastic plating’ impervious to water; perfect for mountain biking in the wetter months or over-washers of bikes. The Lite is just that, a lighter viscosity which works well for road bikes or dryer summer conditions.
If you are wanting the same performance in a more eco-friendly form, the Bio Green G10 ticks all the boxes. made from plant, vegetable and seed oils, it sounds almost good enough to drink for brekky (drinking chain lube not recommended), and it’s fully biodegradable. The Café Dumonde is coffee-scented but still 100% plant-based. It certainly smells good enough to drink, and the roadies will love it for their coffee shop rides.
