Wellington City Council is proposing to increase the annual cycling budget from 1.8 million to 4.3 million. That’s huge. It’s great news for anyone who rides a bike, wants to ride a bike, wants safer cycling for their friends and family, or wants fewer traffic jams.

But it’s not certain yet. Without strong community support, we could lose that funding, and be stuck with a few green bike boxes and not much else. The council has a lot of priorities to juggle, so we need to let our councillors know that safer cycling is really important.

You can make a submission on the council’s Draft Annual Plan 2014/15 to show your support.

What to say in your submission:

State your support for investing $4.3 million in cycling. And say why, eg:

I love cycling but hate mixing with busy traffic.

I want my spouse / kids / granny to enjoy the benefits of biking.

Cycling benefits everyone: less congestion, easier parking, cleaner air, more liveable city.
