If you follow Spoke on Instagram you may have noticed that I was out of the office a couple of weeks back, and I was claiming a Glacier Lakes helicopter as my office. I was in fact in a chopper shooting all the stills to showcase a new 7-day stage race that will be taking place in January 2016. It’s called The Pioneer and the very comprehensive website for the event went live today (right here). There’s an official launch taking place today in Christchurch but you can have your own little one at your desk right now.
So the race starts in Christchurch and heads inland and after some pretty damn massive days and quite a bit of serious climbing it arrives in Queenstown. Each night will be spent in a different host town and depending on how serious you are on the $7000 prize money (for the fastest overall team) you’ll get a chance to take in some awesome parts of the Southern Lakes region. I should mention that the total cash prize pool is over $30,000.
It’s a teams event and the entry fee is NZD$2,499 per person. You have to ride as a team of two, so it’s $4,998 per team. A special inaugural year earlybird entry offer is available for the first 50 teams entered before 30 June 2015: NZD$1,999 per person (NZD$3,998 per team). Online entries close on 31 October 2015, unless sold out prior.
