I thought teaching my kids to mountain bike would be easy. But the other day when I heard myself saying to my seven year old, “if you want to be part of this family, you better enjoy riding a bike”, I realised I might not be the best one to show them my favourite pastime. Enter….WORD (Wellington Off-Road Riding Department).

There’s a summer day camp and an after school term programme designed specifically for 10-16 year olds. All abilities are welcome to join in the fun. They split into groups with a WORD mountain bike instructor so kids can ride with mates of similar radness. All of the instructors are experienced riders (like me) with a knack for teaching (unlike me). Ash even wrote the BikeNZ manual for instructing youth mountain biking. Perfect.

Thanks WORD for encouraging the younger ones to enjoy dirt just as much as I do (oh and giving me a couple hours to ride guilt free).
