Yesterday AKDH (Auckland Downhill Club) ran their monthly shuttle out at Maraetai. The trail network out in the East Auckland town has grown significantly over the last year thanks to the local group: Pohutukawa Coast Bike Club www.pcbc.co.nz.
An AKDH annual membership gets you access to these relaxed shuttles days at $25 a pop. All proceeds go back into rider development; they currently have two juniors over in Europe preparing for Champery in two weeks. Get involved with the club and access to shuttle days www.akdh.co.nz
The shuttle was running from the back Trig point which gave the racer heads access to the old race course and the trail junkies were able to bang out run after run of this plus any of the eight other trails. The trails range from flat out pinned to steep and loamy. The weather was killer and all the tracks dried up really quickly, meaning that over the course of the day we got about 15 runs in.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of riding what is arguably some of the best singletrack in Auckland, sign up with the crew at Pohutukawa who for a measly $25/ year will give you a trail map, plus a permit to legally be in the forest. These guys also have their own shuttle trailer and regularly run shuttle days in turn for a few hours’ labour maintaining the trails.
